Note! The 2012 Sparrow State Championships to be held at Somers Yacht Club, March 31st
Somers Yacht Club will host the Sparrow Victorian Titles on Saturday 31st March 2012.
The Sparrow was originally designed and built by Ron Major (Winston Marine) locally at Tyabb. They were conceived as a general purpose sailing and training dinghy particularly for the conditions on Western Port. Some 430 craft were constructed from 1974 to 1983 with many still in active service.
The Championship has been held annually since the mid 1970s with most of the original trophies still awarded. There have been many highlights. Judy Hale was the Open Class winner in 1975, only 17 days after the birth of her daughter Vanessa! More recent prize winners include sailors from local clubs who have gone on to great success in larger classes but still get back into a Sparrow for this event. Names such as Derek Hollander, Lachlan and Tobi Gibson, Chris and James Wierzbowski, Pip Pietromonaco and Josh Flipp can be found on the trophies. Somers members Caitlin Davies and David Wilson competed in 2011 with considerable success.
Many of the yachts being raced are in original condition and the great thing about this event is the closeness of the racing. Many former winners now compete with and against their children. Some crews try to create a carnival atmosphere by sailing in fancy dress. In 2005 “Captain Sparrow” made an appearance in full super hero costume!
So put the date in your calendar and go and find a Sparrow. They are still out there and do not need much work to make them at best a race winner and at least a lot of fun!
